Al-Firqat al-Nājiyah. Al-Tā’ifat al-Mansūrah. Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamā’ah. Ahl al-Qiblah. Ahl al-Bid’ah…
These are all very loaded and sometimes highly politicised statements, that Muslims have used throughout the ages.
But have we misunderstood them today?
In this One-on-One Big Discussion, Islam21c’s Chief Editor Dr Salman Butt is joined by Islamic scholar and teacher Sh Fraz Farhat, to discuss some of the understandings and misunderstandings of the famous hadīth of the prophet (sall Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam):
“My ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all of whom will be in the Fire except one…” [Tirmidhi, 2641]
Have we understood this hadith correctly?
Who are these sects?
Are they even ‘sects’ as we understand the term today?
